Oblivion by joseph kosinski epub
Oblivion is a science fiction potpourri that borrows so much from so many films it completely forgets to create its own identity in the process. It is a plate filled with lovely ingredients, but it's not a dish. Not even by a long shot. The conceit and setting, while not very original, are fine, filled with a great deal of potential.
And for the better part of the first act, I thought I was finally going to be treated to some original Sci-Fi. But alas, after not too long a time two things happen. Firstly, the plot starts telegraphing where it wants to go so obviously that it becomes nigh impossible to not play out the rest of the film…. Oblivion is a film you may or may not remember from about years ago. Tom Cruise is in it playing a man on a post-apocalyptic Earth.
The best kinds of Science Fiction wrestle with metaphors for life, politics, religion or some sort of universal human condition. Cruise is always reliable, there's a great use of one permissible F bomb in a PG movie and M83 scored this, but the film is convoluted, derivative and horribly boring.
The female characters are atrociously written, male characters are too but at least they are given one distinguishing feature - Morgan Freeman smokes a cigar and Jaime Lannister has funky hairstyle. That's it. What the hell is this thing!
For the first half, it's about an Apple Store employee who goes around repairing iPod drones in his flying bubble car. The second half is about clones??????? Why did I miss this in theaters? Why weren't you all talking about how bonkers stupid it was??? It's obvious how this got made after a bidding war, no less! This is like, one fifth of its way to being a cool sci-fi movie.
But I dug that one fifth! Tom Cruise never seems to adhere to the good practice of wearing a motorcycle helmet. What message is this sending our children? That it's ok to ride around on a motorcycle without wearing a helmet? Well I'm fine with it. Tom's in a bad place in his life, in this particular film; he's living with an annoying trollop five football fields above apocalyptic post nuclear war Earth and having to do mundane work tasks outside whilst being subjected to unsettling memories.
No wonder he's taking risks. Oblivion is perhaps one of the most daring trend-setting movies you will see this year. It is a fantastic Harlequin Romance that successfully integrates an interesting 20 minute short science fiction film, and it features more strong female characters than you will see in any Hollywood film.
Jack is a mechanic who has amnesia. He lives with Victoria, his partner in life and in work, but he keeps having memory flashes of a beautiful young woman he feels he knows. He can't stop thinking about her. Rating details. More filters. Sort order. Start your review of Oblivion.

Apparently, it was to become a graphic novel and a chapter was given out in Comic-con , with a "to be continued.

Most of the population had been evacuated to one of the moons of Saturn. A couple, though, proceeds on their work in the deserted planet: Jack, the drones-fixer, and wife Victoria, who, from home, helps him with communication work and missions.
Yet Jack has been haunted by dreams of him meeting a girl in before-destruction-New York; presumably, she, being his wife Julia; dreams which involve a wedding ring, and happy moments shared together.
In one of his missions he gets to find some survivors; one of them is precisely: Julia. The encounters with the so-called rebels in fact, informed humans will lead Jack to know about the truth. One of the interesting characteristics of Jack is that he secretly has a sort of refuge, where he collects old stuff from earth before destruction; especially, books; on Ancient Rome, namely.
A story of deception and memory. Sep 28, Claire marked it as to-read. This movie made me sad. It was so awesome and I thought to myself, I really wish I could have read this as a book first, because obviously books are always better than the movie, but of course when I look it up there is no book. Alright, it's about a man who scans earth was abandoned by all human beings. But, hey!
I loved the film. It was a really good film, I love the acting, especially Tom Cruise's performance, visual style and effects. Favourite comic and movie ever.
