Backup exec backup to disk setup

Drives should be safely removed from the system before the drive is unpluged from the system. The drives also must be inventoried after each change for Backup Exec to be aware of the contents of the drive. In some cases, a service restart may be required. It is very important to note the settings located in Tools, Options, Media Management. If None is selected, this will negate the media set settings and the Overwrite Protection Period will be ignored.

Or should I just re-create the job manually? It's asking for a password when I Catalouge the media. Is that the password of the backup Exec user on the old installation? Sorry for my delayed response. If you have installed R3 then dont merge the data and catalog. I am just quoting another Symantec Employee here in answer to your password issue.

You could view the original Thread here. These passwords were set at the time via a setting in the Media section of the job properties and are required to catalog the media. Note if you attempt to catalog a password protected tape with a current version of Backup Exec and that tape was written with an older version of Backup Exec, then you can catalog as long as you know the password and define it in the catalog job properties. You will need this password to be able to catalog the media.

To specify a password for a media that is password-protected , When you create the catalog job, on the Properties pane, under Target, click Device, and then select the appropriate options.

Somehow it managed to catalogue the media even though I didn't enter a password. I have managed to restore the data I needed from the old media. Thanks so much for all the quick responses. Hi, I have done a server migration from Server to server , and I am wanting to import the old backup exec exec disk to disk to tape folder which is on a Dell RD drive without overwriting any of the old backups, so I can catalouge these and restore from them.

Backup Exec manages the retention of backup sets differently depending on the type of storage to which you back up the data. Table: Storage types and backup set retention. Disk storage, disk cartridge devices, deduplication disk storage, storage arrays, cloud storage, and virtual disks.

Backup Exec uses data lifecycle management to automatically delete expired backup sets from disk-based storage. By default, Backup Exec keeps the most recent backup sets that are necessary to restore any backed-up component of a server, even if the backup sets expire. For disk-based storage and any disk cartridges that you reattach to the Backup Exec server after a specified number of days, you can prevent Backup Exec from reclaiming that disk space.

A global setting limits Backup Exec to read-only operations on disk-based storage or a disk cartridge if it has been detached for a specified number of days. You can also limit Backup Exec to read-only operations per disk storage or disk cartridge by enabling the setting on the device properties. See How data lifecycle management DLM deletes expired backup sets on disk-based storage. See How to restore data from a reattached or reinserted disk-based storage device.

ADAMM expires the backup sets that are stored on media according to a set of rules that you apply to the media. Backup sets are not automatically deleted from tape cartridge media, but they can be overwritten, depending on the rules that you specify. The set of rules that manages tape cartridge media is called a media set. You create media sets that specify append periods, overwrite protection periods, and vaulting periods. You can perform the following actions on backup sets that are on disk-based storage:.

Change the expiration date of backup sets to keep them longer or expire them immediately.
