Oh, I did not realize customer is using ESXi 6. This is expected behavior with ESXi 6. Reporting version details with open-vm-tools requires ESXi 6. I tried reproduce on our ESXi6. From logs, the version used is: [Apr 09 I will attach it to the bug privately and ask ldu to provide it to you, since its customer data I cannot post it public. From logs, I see that vmtoolsd was able to use vSocket channel. I expect VMTools version to be correctly reported for the case logs have been provided for.
We need to look at ESXi host side logs to diagnose it further. We also need to diagnose ESXi 6. There are release notes for technical and release notes and I looked at the tech notes for the kernel under the technical documentation, however there wasn't any information. If anyone can provide a little more info on how to learn this or get a better understanding, I'm all ears.

This is part of the response that I've got: There are multiples modules got included in the latest kernel of RHEL-6, but again those are written by Red Hat, its taken from upstream and included in the latest kernel of RHEL 6 and 7 to make the functionality more smother.
